News brief | 4 October 2026
India and Canada are scheduled to begin the fifth round of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Ottawa on October 5. The discussions are expected to run for five days, according to the government update carried by News on AIR.
The two countries have said they want to conclude the agreement by the end of 2026. A CEPA could set terms for trade in goods and services, while negotiations also address market access and other areas where the sides need to bridge differences.
Bilateral goods trade was reported at 8.66 billion US dollars in 2024–25, with Indian exports accounting for 4.22 billion dollars. Those figures provide context for the talks, but they do not predict the outcome of negotiations.
The negotiating round is an update in a longer process; any final agreement would still need to be concluded and implemented through the countries’ respective procedures.
