News brief | 4 October 2026

Two male Great Indian Bustards have been released into the wild at Rajasthan’s Desert National Park, according to a Ministry of Environment release published by the Press Information Bureau on October 4.

The release follows around ten years of captive-breeding work. The Great Indian Bustard is among India’s most threatened birds, and conservation efforts combine breeding, habitat protection and monitoring of released birds.

The release is an important milestone, but it is not by itself evidence that the species has recovered. Survival, adaptation and breeding in the wild will need to be tracked over time.

The location and conservation details in this report are based on the government announcement. The photograph is illustrative and does not depict the released birds.
